The staff-initiated costume days, which have become a tradition, spice up the busy clinic life with some fun, bringing smiles to so many faces. And smiles are known to have healing power.

The patient who underwent the 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣th robot-assisted surgery at Semmelweis University on February 10 is now recovering at home following a successful onco-gynecological intervention. More than 4,000 robotic surgeries have been performed in Hungary so far. The first operation of this kind, a gall bladder removal, was performed on May 24, 2022, also at Semmelweis University, where the da Vinci Xi Surgical System is planned to become a key tool for live donor kidney transplants.

Around a thousand secondary school students from inside and outside Hungary, even more than last year, came to the Semmelweis Campus Tour open day.

The visitors were able to see the university’s infrastructure, laboratories, and lecture halls in person, as well as gain an insight into some of the exciting aspects of practical training. The program, organized by the Directorate of Student Services (HSZI) and Semmelweis Students’ Union (HÖK), provided an excellent opportunity for students to experience first-hand the environment that is waiting for them if they continue their studies at the university after successful admission.

Nobel Prize winner Dr. Ferenc Krausz, CEO and Scie

Nobel Prize winner Dr. Ferenc Krausz, CEO and Scientific Director of the Center for Molecular Fingerprinting (CMF), received the Semmelweis Budapest Award, the university’s most prestigious international scientific prize. At the event held in the Semmelweis Salon, Dr. Ferenc Krausz delivered a scientific talk in English entitled “Laser physics for shaping the future of medicine,” in which he gave an insight into the potential of using laser pulses in medicine. CMF and Semmelweis University conduct joint research in data science, so they established the John von Neumann Institute for Data Science in December last year.

Semmelweis University students sent in a record-breaking 550 submissions to this year’s Students’ Scientific Conference (TDK), which was held in three venues on February 6-8. University students from outside Hungary also presented their research findings at the 14th edition of the International Students’ Conference. Compared to last year, there was a significant increase in the number of Hungarian and English presentations classified due to pending patents.

The Students’ Scientific Conference, a Hungarian specialty, was not only a platform for presentations but also an occasion when they could experience professional debates for the first time as candidates of the next generation of Hungarian intellectuals.

Boróka, Emese and Ádám’s baby daughter, was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of the Bókay Street Department of Semmelweis University’s Pediatric Center due to unexpected complications during her birth. Her attending physicians, Dr. Miklós Szabó and Dr. Ünőke Méder, immediately ordered cooling therapy to mitigate the severe neurological damage caused by the oxygen deprivation, and the success of the treatment moved the parents to start a fundraising campaign for the center. Their initiative was so successful that the Bókay Pediatric Center Foundation was able to use the funds to buy two new cooling units worth tens of millions of forints.

This week, another child was operated on with robotic surgery, also for a liver tumor, at Semmelweis University’s Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology.
