The new operating room, named after dr. Péter Gloviczki was completed at the Heart and Vascular Centre of Semmelweis University. The internationally renowned vascular surgeon himself took part in the ceremonial ribbon-cutting in the company of Rector Dr. Béla Merkely and dr. Balázs Hankó, the Deputy State Secretary for Higher Education at the Ministry of Innovation and Technology.

Welcome, Matvij!

A woman fleeing the war in Ukraine gave birth at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Semmelweis University on the evening of March 1. The little boy is 56 centimetres in length and weighs 3.4kg – both mother and baby are well. On the circumstances of the birth Dr. Nándor Ács, the director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said that two colleagues of Transcarpathian origin who spoke Ukrainian worked in the maternity ward and in the infant ward so that they could communicate with the mother in her mother tongue.

Semmelweis University will provide health care for

Semmelweis University will provide health care for refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine in all acute and urgent cases, and will increase respective human resources capacity if necessary. The institution will also give students, researchers and lecturers working in the field of medicine and health sciences the opportunity to continue their work and studies in Hungarian, English and German. The university has relocated 35 students who had previously studied in Ukraine to its dormitories so far, and the admission of more international medical students is underway. The institution provides a venue for collecting donations in its central warehouse as well.

For the first time in Hungary, two cryoablation pr

For the first time in Hungary, two cryoablation procedures were performed at Semmelweis University in patients with malignant kidney cancer.

During cryoablation, a thin, wandlike needle (cryoprobe) is inserted through the skin and directly into the cancerous tumor. Due to the anesthetic effect of freezing the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia, so it can be used, among others, in elderly heart patients for whom anesthesia is contraindicated.

In this year’s Semmelweis International Students’ Conference, over a hundred presentations were shared by students from 14 universities in 8 countries. Due to the pandemic, all lectures took place online. However, for the first time, nations from beyond our continent were represented as well, thanks to the university’s growing number of international contacts.

Liu Shaoang won the short track speed skating men's 500 metres gold medal at the Beijing Olympics. This is Hungary's first-ever individual winter Olympic championship title. A fond memory was when he and his brother Liu Shaolin Sándor were our guests at the last Semmelweis's Summer University.
