The teams selected for the Demo Day had three minutes to convince the jury of the significance and market potential of their developments in the form of a pitch. The presentations were followed by a seven-minute professional Q&A session, during which the jury examined the projects’ professional foundations, innovative content and business potential in detail, while providing feedback to the teams.
Among the students of Semmelweis University, Julianna Clara Pollok presented her project, TubePrinter Compact, as project leader. The project offers a solution that automates the labelling of microcentrifuge tubes used in small laboratories. Using laser engraving, the system creates markings directly on the tubes, thereby eliminating errors arising from manual labelling. At the same time, its compact design and affordable cost make it easily applicable in smaller laboratories as well.
Veronika Ratsyburynska, a student also affiliated with Semmelweis University, participated in the LaserDepth MICRO project, working as a team member to develop a dental navigation system capable of real-time, three-dimensional root canal mapping. During treatment, the technology continuously tracks the movement of the probe, enabling an accurate 3D reconstruction of the tooth’s internal structure and thereby contributing to improved outcomes in root canal treatments.
The third project representing Semmelweis University was REACH, in which Avin Aphrodite Babakhani participated as a team member. The high-resolution data glove, developed at Óbuda University, is designed for the remote control of industrial robots and for capturing the movements of humanoid robotic hands. The system is capable of tracking all 23 degrees of freedom of the human hand, while ensuring reliable operation in industrial environments thanks to its resistance to magnetic interference.
The projects presented at the Demo Day were evaluated by a distinguished professional jury consisting of Mátyás Pótsa (Robert Bosch Kft.), Barnabás Málnay (ELTE Faculty of Informatics, STRT), Imre Hild, Óbuda Uni Venture Capital (OUVC), and Róbert Somogyi, representing the National Innovation Agency (NIÜ).
From innovative ideas to marketable solutions
It is a key priority for Semmelweis University to encourage its students to become increasingly involved in innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives. One excellent means of achieving this is the Hungarian Startup University Program, coordinated by the National Innovation Agency (NIÜ). The aim of HSUP is to transform students’ innovative ideas into marketable solutions while providing them with an entrepreneurial mindset, business knowledge and practical experience. As the closing event of the HSUP academic year, the Demo Day provided an excellent opportunity for participants to present their ideas in a real-world market and industry environment, build connections with representatives of leading companies and investors, and gain valuable professional experience in the commercialization of research results and the world of startups. The participation of three projects involving Semmelweis University students clearly demonstrates the commitment of the University’s students to innovation and the development of healthcare technologies.
