Semmelweis University was the first in Hungary to

Semmelweis University was the first in Hungary to perform a simultaneous liver and pancreas transplant, saving the life of a 16-year-old patient. The operation lasted just over three hours, and since then both organs have been functioning well, with no need for insulin: The patient was able to return home the week after the transplant. This type of combined transplant is necessary only in rare cases; according to the Eurotransplant database, five to six such operations are performed every year, mostly in Germany and Belgium. The rare operation was followed shortly afterwards by a similar one, also at the Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology, which, like the first one, was successful.

The World Aquatics Swimming Championships (25m) ended in Budapest less than a week ago, with great sporting performances, countless Hungarian successes, and a fantastic atmosphere. This is the umpteenth time that Semmelweis University has provided medical care at a sporting event held in Hungary, and once again we have played an important role in the work that goes on backstage during the world championships. On the closing weekend, experts participating in the world championships gathered for a short conference to discuss an important topic of sports medicine and sports science, which was also co-organized by the university. The accompanying program of the six-day event focused on shoulder health and injuries, with presentations and discussions allowing team doctors from different countries to share their experiences of medical care for swimmers. Stunning results, professional encounters, new friendships, and a true celebration of swimming in Budapest!

If plaque isn't removed from areas like the gumline and between the teeth within 24 hours, gingivitis can develop. Even regular but improper cleaning can cause inflammation and dental issues.

Semmelweis University studied how personalized oral hygiene tools, combined with education, can help prevent dental diseases in patients with existing dental problems.

The study included 102 adult patients, who were grouped according to their oral health condition and brushing habits.

To gauge progress, the researchers used four chair-side diagnostic indices: out of which two proved most effective in detecting inflammation in an early phase.

Results: Patients who received education and used individualized cleaning devices experienced inflammation and periodontal disease to reduce at a faster pace – in 2 weeks – while others took 12 weeks to see significant reductions.

We organized heart-warming programs at several university locations to mark Saint Nicolas Day, traditionally held on December 6 in Hungary. At the Semmelweis University Kindergarten, the András Pető Kindergarten, the Pediatric Center's Bókay and Tűzoltó Street Departments, the Városmajor Heart and Vascular Center, as well as at the event organized by the Family Friendly University Center, we presented the children with gift packages and celebrated Santa Claus together.

A total of about one hundred graduating students received their diplomas in the Healthcare Manager Master’s Program, the Advanced Training in Quality and Patient Safety Management, and the Advanced Training in Social Service Management at the Health Services Management Training Center of Semmelweis University’s Faculty of Health and Public Administration. “Among those who have just graduated are senior and middle managers, aspiring professionals, and several members of our university staff, all of whom have in common that they are here because knowledge and a desire to do something are their intrinsic need. They would like to learn more, work more efficiently, and become even better leaders. In addition to the conferral of doctorates upon PhD students, several distinctions were presented at the Dies Academicus ceremony. At the Ceremonial Senate Meeting held in the Nagyvárad Square Theoretical Block, the excellent PhD instructors were honored, and the Pro Educatione Awards and the Outstanding PhD Student Awards by the Association of Friends of Semmelweis University were presented. Honorary associate professor and honorary professor titles were also awarded, alongside leadership appointments and further distinctions by the rector and the deans of the university.

Semmelweis University is committed to innovation, continuous development, and improvement, including advanced e-health solutions. A perfect example is the university's proprietary Semmelweis HELP symptom checker, a real success story among the Hungarian population since its launch in June 2023. The app initially focused on children's diseases and was updated and expanded in October this year for the whole family to use.

For almost a year, 14 physicians and two communication experts worked on the upgrade of this development unique in Hungary, as a result of which the mobile and web applications were expanded to include ophthalmology, obstetrics and gynecology, and general adult family medicine. With the addition of the adult module, the app now includes over 740 symptoms of disease or injury and helps users know when and what kind of medical help they should seek. The niche app has recently exceeded 200,000 downloads, and the developers are busy installing further useful upgrades.
