Mission of the Program

The Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship was established by the Hungarian Government for those who live in a Hungarian diaspora outside of the European Union and wish to study at a Hungarian higher education institution to develop their personal, professional and cultural relations to Hungary. The program aims to support the professional advancement of the scholarship holders with high-quality Hungarian higher education while improving their Hungarian language skills and strengthening their Hungarian identity. 

Who can apply?

You may have the chance to become a Diaspora Scholarship holder, if

  • you are living in a Hungarian diaspora,
  • you are a foreign citizen with a foreign address,
  • you have been living abroad for at least 10 years in a row,
  • you have been doing your secondary education outside Hungary for the past 4 years.

The program is available for the members of a Hungarian diaspora living in any country outside of the European Union, the Republic of Serbia or the Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine. You can find further information about diasporas here →

How to apply?

If you wish to apply to one of our study programs with Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship, you need to apply through the online application system of Tempus Public Foundation and there you can choose your selected study program at Semmelweis University as your first priority.

Application timeline:

  1. November – January: Application period. All scholarship applications shall be submitted through the online application system of Tempus Public Foundation

  2. February: Technical checks of the application and validation of recommendations.

  3. March-May: Semmelweis admission procedure. Please find the details of the procedure under the Semmelweis admission page.

  4. June-July: Notification about results.

Provisions covered by the scholarship:

  • Tuition-free education: exemption from the payment of tuition fee.
  • Monthly stipend
    • Non-degree, bachelor’s, master’s one-tier master’s level:
      HUF 43,700 / month
    • Doctoral level program:
      HUF 140,000/month for the first phase of education (4 semesters)
      HUF 180,000/month for the second phase of education (4 semesters)
  • Accommodation contribution: dormitory placement OR a monthly contribution of HUF 40 000 to accommodation costs for the whole duration of the scholarship period.
  • One-off travel allowance
    One-occasion travel allowance of HUF 330,000 if the distance between Budapest and the applicant’s place of residence (=city/town) is 8,000 km or more. The distance is calculated based on the Erasmus + Distance Calculator.
  • Travel contribution: Hungary pass. Reimbursement of a Hungary Pass, which entitles the Scholarship Holder to unlimited travel throughout Hungary (e.g. trains and interurban buses in all counties).
  • Medical insurance

Rights and Obligations

All scholarship holders are bound by the Operational Regulations of the Hungarian Diaspora Scholarship.

We encourage regular review of the Operational Regulations, as the changes might affect the scholarship holder status.
