Tooth extraction is most often necessary when the problem is caused by extensive decay, chronic inflammation, infection, a fractured tooth, or crowding of the teeth. “Eating and drinking water are recommended in the 2-3 hours before tooth extraction; however, it is very important that before the patient arrives at the doctor’s office, they pay special attention to oral hygiene, as this can greatly reduce the risk of infection and speed up the healing process. “Do not eat anything immediately before the tooth extraction, and if you smoke, do not light up under any circumstances at this point,” advises Dr. Árpád Joób-Fancsaly, Professor at Semmelweis University’s Department of Oro-Maxillofacial Surgery and Stomatology.
The specialist also points out that before the procedure, we must inform our doctor of any drug sensitivities we may have and list the medications we take regularly, such as blood thinners or medicine for high blood pressure.
Among other things, it is also important to mention any existing chronic conditions, particularly diabetes, heart disease, and hemophilia.
The dentist removes the tooth using tools and methods appropriate to its condition; if the procedure requires it, the resulting wound is sutured at the end of the operation. As a basic rule, do not eat, and if possible do not drink anything while the anesthetic is still effective. Do not pick at or suck on the wound.
Oral hygiene is very important after tooth extraction: In consultation with the dentist, already on the day of the procedure, you may gently rinse with the solution they recommend and clean your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush, carefully avoiding the wound – but do not scrub. Smokers should avoid cigarettes for at least three days, as smoking slows wound healing and can significantly increase the risk of infection. Do not use a drinking straw due to the vacuum effect, and it is recommended that you should consume lukewarm, soft foods in the first few days.
Avoid small-seeded fruits, as well as hot and carbonated beverages; however, it is a misconception that consuming dairy products is prohibited after a tooth extraction. Feel free to eat thick vegetable dishes, cream soups, fruit or vegetable purées, and smoothies that contain dairy products.
