Dr. Péter Ferdinandy and Dr. Balázs Győrffy was also included in the 2023 list of Highy Cited Researchers.
A new list of the world’s most cited researchers has been published, which also features two employees of Semmelweis University: Dr. Péter Ferdinandy, Vice-Rector for Science and Innovations, Director of the Institute of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, and Dr. Balázs Győrffy, Head of the Department of Bioinformatics. The list of researchers based on data from Web of Science contains a total of 7,125 names from all fields of science.

In the ranking, the highly cited publications published in the last ten years, i.e. between 2011 and 2022, which have a maximum of 30 authors, were taken into account. Highly cited publications are those that are in the top 1 percent of their field in terms of the number of references to them. In the scientific world, citations are a measure of scientific impact. The more highly cited a field is, the more highly cited publications it takes to be listed. The ranking considers 21 scientific fields, as well as those who achieved outstanding citations cross-fields at the same time.

Two researchers of Semmelweis University were included in the 2023 list of Highly Cited Researchers. Dr. Péter Ferdinandy, Vice-Rector for Science and Innovations, University Professor at the Institute of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, is on the list for the sixth time this year with 13 excellent publications. During 2014 and 2017, he was among the best in the fields of pharmacology and toxicology, while every year since 2020, he has been mentioned in the so-called cross-field category that takes into account all fields. He published his highly cited publications in the field of comorbidity modeling used for the development of new therapies. The Vice-Rector emphasized that the original and summary publications are equally important, since although the latter are cited in greater numbers, only those who contribute to the development of science with their own observations and thus gain credibility in the scientific society can achieve outstanding scientific results and citations. When asked what it takes for someone to be among the most cited researchers in the world for years, Dr. Péter Ferdinandy highlighted four things for our website:

Adequate and continuous financial support of the Hungarian science is important, so are the high-quality university infrastructure and academic environment, a well-organized research team, as well as research and development cooperation with businesses. It can also be seen from these that, although individual performance is recognized on the list, outstanding citations are the combined result of teamwork and a suitable supportive environment.

The Vice-Rector emphasized: Semmelweis University has everything for outstanding scientific work, and he is particularly proud that he has achieved most of his publications by working in Hungarian laboratories throughout his career.

Another university researcher on the list is Dr. Balázs Győrffy, Head of the Department of Bioinformatics, who after 2022 is again among the most cited, this time also in the cross-field area, with 15 highly cited publications.
