A third year student at Semmelweis University, Balázs Márki rescued an elderly man in the metro last week. Due to the student’s prompt medical assistance and professionalism, the man who had a serious stroke, fortunately survived. Without the student’s help the injury of the man might have been lethal.
“I was on the way to the library when I saw somebody who was approximately 55-60 years’ old, lying on the floor in the metro. I have started the medical examination immediately, and since the injured person’s pulse was strong enough I continued the medical process on the platform. Soon a fireman joined me who also had experience in patient care in emergency situations. He brought the necessary equipment with the help of which we together started to stabilize the patient. The ambulance car arrived right afterwards.”, said Balázs Márki.
During the first year at Semmelweis University every medical student participates in a First Aid training, and during their second year studies of internal medicine they have to learn how to examine a patient. According to Balázs Márki in this situation every medical student would have been capable of providing basic medical assistance. He also said that he has learnt a great deal during his clinical trainings, including the one at the Centre of Simulation. After finishing his second year studies he worked for the Hungarian National Ambulance Service for six months, thus he was able to help the patient easily.
Balázs Márki said that he chose the medical profession because it is colourful and it offers many challenges. He is especially interested in anaesthesia, intensive therapy, and emergency patient care, and he intends to continue working at any of these fields, but he would like to take the special examination in cardiology as well.
