The proposal regarding the regulation of exams taken in August, presented by Dr. József Tímár, Vice Rector for General and Educational Affairs was accepted by the Senate of Semmelweis University on 7th May 2015. According to these provisions, the students of the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences have the opportunity to take exams on the last seven working days of August. In 2015 dates between 25th August and 4th September will be assigned to exams.
Vice Rector Dr. József Tímár pointed out that by accepting the amendments made to the Examination and Studies Regulation (TVSZ), the two-year-long consultation regarding the aforementioned issue came to a conclusion. The decision on the proposal brought before the Senate was accepted by the leadership of the university and the faculties, and the Students’ Union (HÖK) by active cooperation and mutual consent.
This proposal complies with the amendment of the implementation of Decree No. 87/2015 of 9 April, to be implemented on 15th August 2015, regarding the Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education. According to the Decree, exams taken in August are considered to be exams organized within the scope of the examination period designated to the spring semester and they differ from other exams only in the days they are held on. They are bound neither by the decisions of the Examination and Studies Committee (TVB), nor by leniency applications. The Vice Rector emphasized that it makes the procedure simpler and faster and exams taken in this period are not considered retake exams, but exams belonging to the courses completed during the spring semester. These exams are subject to the general rules; therefore the institutions must provide the necessary circumstances for the examination of all students enrolled, regardless of their numbers.
The institutions need to assign two days for the exams of each subject, minimum two days apart. Exams taken in August can either be first- or retake exams. The regulation of the exam period in August was also requested and supported by foreign students.
Dr. József Tímár mentioned that the current regulation provides students with more opportunities to take exams in August and allows greater liberty for the institutions. The new system will be evaluated in the autumn.
