Semmelweis University students and alumni won Hungary a total of two gold, three silver and two bronze medals at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Semmelweis University’s Katalin Kovács (Sport Management major) and Krisztina Fazekas (Sport Management major) finished first in the K4 500m, as part of the women’s kayak four team, marking the first time in twenty years that Hungary has won gold in this event. Katalin Kovács also brought home a silver medal in the women’s kayak double 500m event with Natasa Douchev-Janics.
The other gold medal was secured by Rudolf Dombi (Physical Education and Coaching major) and Roland Kökény in the men’s kayak double (K2) 1000m.
Aside from Kovács, Fazekas and Dombi, five other Semmelweis University students earned medals at the 2012 Olympic Games. Éva Csernoviczki (Physical Education and Coaching major) was the first to win Hungary a medal in London, bringing home bronze in the women’s 48kg judo. Miklós Ungvári (Sport Coaching Master major), another of the University’s judo athletes, became a silver medallist in the men’s 66kg event.
The men’s kayak four team, which included the University’s Zoltán Kammerer and Tamás Kulifai (Recreation major), won the silver medal in the 1000m event. Ádám Marosi (Sport Management major) brought home Hungary’s final medal at the London Olympics, finishing third in the men’s modern pentathlon.
