One hundred and three Hungarian university athletes are set to participate in the 26th Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China, constituting the largest Hungarian delegation ever to participate in a Universiade held overseas. Taking place between August 12 and 23, this multi-sport competition is open to university and college students from around the world. Around a quarter of the Hungarian athletes taking part in the event are Semmelweis University students.
Althogether more than seven thousand students will be competing in 24 different sports at this year’s event. In addition to the 12 mandatory sports (athletics, basketball, fencing, football, gymnastics, high diving, judo, tennis, table tennis, volleyball, water polo), the Shenzhen competition will feature sailing, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, aerobics, weight lifting, golf and taekwondo, among others.
Hungary has collected a total of 112 gold, 92 silver and 98 bronze medals in the Summer Universiade to date. At the most recent competition, held in 2009 in Belgrade, Serbia, Hungarian athletes earned one first place, two second place and five third place standings.
