ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025 has been published, showing that Semmelweis University has made progress in several disciplines. The institution is now among the world’s top 75 in Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences; it is among the top 400 in Public Health; it also retains its place among the top 300 in Dentistry & Oral Sciences, Medical Technology, and Biological Sciences, and among the top 200 in Clinical Medicine.

ShanghaiRanking classifies institutions in 55 different subjects within five main disciplines (Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences). Semmelweis University continues to rank highest among universities in Hungary and the region on most lists relevant to its field of activity.

Semmelweis University has achieved its best ranking once again in Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, improving on last year’s result by one category to reach the top 75. It has thus surpassed institutions such as ETH Zurich, New York University, and the University of Bologna. The top three places on the list are held by Harvard University, Peking Union Medical College, and Monash University in Australia. Among Hungarian universities, the University of Szeged ranks between 301 and 400, while the University of Debrecen is listed between 401 and 500. Within the academic indicators, Semmelweis University has achieved the greatest improvement in the number of publications in selected journals belonging to the respective academic subjects. As Dr. Péter Ferdinandy, Vice-Rector for Science and Innovations, noted:

It is a great honor that Semmelweis University is once again among the best in the world in such an extremely important and rapidly developing field as Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, which encompasses the areas of the entire process of drug research and development – and we were even able to improve on last year’s ranking.

As Editor-in-Chief of the British Journal of Pharmacology and holder of the distinction of Highly Cited Researcher, Dr. Péter Ferdinandy, who is also Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, played an important role in Semmelweis University’s significant improvement in the Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences indicators. “Behind our success is also our Center for Pharmacology and Drug Research & Development, founded in 2023, which brings together educational and research and development activities in this field across faculties. This year, the center was awarded the excellent research infrastructure qualification by the National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NKFIH). Along with our results in ShanghaiRanking, this proves that we have created a knowledge base that is attractive to external industrial and academic partners, accelerates our international collaborations, and stimulates our publication and innovation activities,” emphasized the vice-rector.

In the field of Clinical Medicine, Semmelweis University retains its place in the top 200. The top three are Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of California, San Francisco. Among Hungarian institutions, the University of Szeged has also made the list, ranking 201-300.

Semmelweis University also remains firmly in the top 300 in the Dentistry & Oral Sciences academic subject list. The top spots here are taken by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, King’s College London, and Harvard University. Among Hungarian higher education institutions, the University of Szeged has made it into the top 400, while the University of Debrecen into the top 500.

Following last year’s ranking, Semmelweis University has once again made it into the top 300 in the field of Medical Technology. Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of California, San Francisco have performed best in this field. No other Hungarian university has made it into the top rankings.

The university has also maintained its position among the top 300 in Biological Sciences, with Harvard University, Stanford University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) achieving the highest rankings. Among Hungarian universities, Eötvös Loránd University has also made it into the top 400.

Semmelweis University has improved on last year’s results in Public Health, making it into the top 400. Harvard University ranks first on this list, followed by Johns Hopkins University, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine; no other Hungarian university has made it into the top rankings.

In Human Biological Sciences, Semmelweis University is ranked 301-400, the same as Eötvös Loránd University, after being ranked 201-300 last year, while the University of Szeged is in the 201-300 position. Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania, and University College London are ranked highest in this field.
