In addition to the conferral of doctorates upon PhD students, several distinctions were presented at the Dies Academicus ceremony. At the Ceremonial Senate Meeting held in the Nagyvárad Square Theoretical Block, the excellent PhD instructors were honored, and the Pro Educatione Awards and the Outstanding PhD Student Awards by the Association of Friends of Semmelweis University were presented. Honorary associate professor and honorary professor titles were also awarded, alongside leadership appointments and further distinctions by the rector and the deans of the university.

“This day, when we award the PhD degree to our doctors and honor our most outstanding citizens, is also a celebration of the present and the future, of the mentors and students of today! Without ‘workshop masters’ and hard-working students, there can be no forward-looking research results, and without those, there can be no scientific excellence,” the rector said at the Ceremonial Senate Meeting. He emphasized that the university was pleased to see an increase in the number of PhD students, which was key both to the university’s research talent pool and its position in the rankings, adding that this academic year 1,201 active PhD students, including 190 international students, pursued their doctoral studies.

The rector stressed that the excellence and recognition of the scientific work at the university had improved, and the publications were increasingly cited worldwide; as a result, Semmelweis University had become the leading higher education institution in Hungary and the region, and the largest medical and health sciences institute in the European Union.

The rector considered the recent decision of the Senate to establish the John von Neumann Institute for Data Science a historic moment, as a result of which the scientific results of the Center for Molecular Fingerprinting would be reflected in the performance of Semmelweis University. Since the beginning of 2024, the center, which is headed by 2023 Nobel laureate Dr. Ferenc Krausz, has been part of the foundation that maintains our university.

Dr. Béla Merkely stressed that since the university’s main assets were its human resources, the moral and financial appreciation of its citizens was crucial. This goal was also enhanced by the recognition of excellence and infrastructural developments.

In 2025, more than HUF 50 billion will be spent on construction and infrastructure development, the largest amount ever in the history of our institution. – Dr. Béla Merkely

Among the forthcoming investments, he mentioned that the National Medical Innovation Training Center and the Városmajor 70 project would be completed next year; the Ferenc Square campus was under construction; the Department of Anatomy, Histology and Embryology was being renovated; the construction plans for the Hőgyes-Schöpf-Merei Pharmaceutical Research Center were being prepared; EOK 2, that is, the Basic Medical Science Center, the Science Park, and the Department of Public Dental Health (FSZOI) were in the planning phase. “Let us see in everything we do that it is a step towards giving patients even better care, even better trained doctors and specialists, even better diagnostics and therapies,” the rector highlighted.

After the ceremonial oath, the PhD degree was conferred on the fresh doctorate holders by Dr. Béla Merkely and Dr. Zoltán Benyó, President of the Doctoral Council, with a handshake. This year, a total of 158 candidates completed their doctoral work: 139 received their diplomas with summa cum laude, 15 with cum laude, and four with rite.

Then Dr. Zoltán Benyó, President of the Doctoral Council, welcomed the newly inaugurated doctors, who are now qualified to conduct independent scientific research. He was pleased to note the steady increase in the number of doctoral students and that the traditionally high quality of postgraduate training had been maintained.

This year’s doctoral candidates have made a significant contribution to this, as a considerable number of the 258 publications of the 158 candidates’ theses were published in Q1 and D1 journals.
– Dr. Zoltán Benyó

He mentioned that more than half of the publications from Semmelweis University were first authored by PhD students. He also pointed out that the scientometric indicators of the publications by the newly conferred doctors exceeded the expected standards by an average of five times, meaning that most students were driven by a genuine interest in science and a sincere desire to discover. “As an educator, it is a particular pleasure to see theevolution from a young TDK student to a PhD researcher, an equal partner in scientific thinking and research design; from a student to a teacher of the next generations of researchers; and I hope that many of you will continue your work as citizens of our university,” said Dr. Zoltán Benyó. Addressing the inaugurated PhDs, he expressed his hope that they would consider their PhDs as a new beginning and that they would dedicate their knowledge to solving the mysteries of science for the benefit of their fellow human beings.

The ceremony continued with the presentation of distinctions and awards.
