For the second time, the Directorate of Alumni Affairs of Semmelweis University organized a charity wine tasting, where participants could taste the wines awarded at the 2021 Semmelweis University National Wine Competition. The proceeds from admission and sponsorship tickets will be used by the Semmelweis University Foundation to develop student spaces.

Participants of the charity wine tasting in the Semmelweis Salon could enjoy the music played by pianist Midián Ruha, then were welcomed by Dr. Tamás Hegedüs, head of the Directorate of Alumni Affairs.

The opening of the charity event was followed by a speech of Rector Dr. Béla Merkely, who drew attention to the importance of the changes in the history of the institution, including the change of model, according to which Semmelweis University has been continuing to operate as a public trust fund instead of a state higher education institution from 1 August 2021.

“The aim is for Semmelweis to have a significant number of supporters and a substantial annual fundraising income, similar to Harvard University and the Mayo Clinic,” the Rector pointed out. He stressed that the institution has embarked on a journey with the goal to become one of the world’s top 100 universities and one of Europe’s top 5 medical universities, however, it needs significant support to achieve this.

Semmelweis University has three main pillars: patient care, education, research and innovation. In our area, the knowledge accumulated in medicine and health sciences doubles every two years

said the Rector, adding that the institution must continue to strengthen its infrastructure and human resources to maintain its leading role.

“We have already achieved a lot, as we are now clearly one of the fastest growing and best universities in Central and Eastern Europe, but we don’t want to stop here. If today’s joint wine tasting brings us even a few steps closer to our goals, we have not come in vain,” said Dr. Béla Merkely.

In addition to admission, participants could also contribute to the fundraising campaign with sponsorship tickets, and the proceeds will be used by the Semmelweis University Foundation to develop student spaces.
