Director Dr. Gál has been awarded in recognition of his outstanding performance in fighting the coronavirus. The “Gratitude for Heroes” awards (Saint Corona Medals) were presented on 21st June 2021, at the event organized at the Szent Imre Teaching Hospital.

Dr. János Gál (clinical director, director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Therapy) was recognized for his hard work during the epidemic, his outstanding professional performance and patient-oriented approach. As the director of the largest Hungarian Respiratory Institute, he and his colleagues have done an amazing job during the most critical period of the pandemic. The “Gratitude for Heroes” medal was established after the first wave of the coronavirus by Róbert Bedros J. (the Hungarian vice hospital commander, director of the Szent Imre Hospital). “I established the award in order to recognize the true heroes of healthcare and to show Hungary that we have numerous people in our healthcare institutions to look up to. Every life is important for us.”

The medal was named after Saint Corona, who saved many lives during a plague in the 2nd century. Close to a hundred medical specialists, general practitioners, healthcare professionals have been presented the award on the 21st June by dr. Róbert Bedros J. Cecília Müller (chief medical officer of Hungary), and János Szlávik (head of department of infectology at the South Pest Central Hospital​) were also among the award winners. The participants observed a minute’s silence in honor of the healthcare professionals who had lost their lives during the fight against coronavirus.
