At the July meeting of Semmelweis University’s Students’ Union a new president was elected and decision was made regarding a number of other positions of the organization. Bálint Tripolszky, student of the Faculty of Medicine and Dr. Szabolcs Lányi submitted their application for the position of the president. The Assembly of the Delegates of the Students’ Union elected Bálint Tripolszky as new president, who has been first vice-president of the organization in the past year and a half. 

In his speech before the meeting’s agenda Dr. Béla Merkely, Rector emphasized the importance of the work of the Students’ Union.

“It is one of the main pillars of the university, as it represents the interests of over 11,000 students. Cooperation with students is of utmost importance as they are our strategic allies in raising Semmelweis University’s education, research and health care activities to the highest level.”, Dr. Béla Merkely said.

The Students’ Union provided strong support in the introduction of the new curriculum at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry. The students also contributed with great involvement and voluntarily to the organization of the university’s programmes in the 250th anniversary year. A blood donation campaign was realized with the help of the Students’ Union and the university’s students were the most active blood donors during the epidemic.

“One of the most important goals of my programme as rector is to make Semmelweis University one of the top 100 universities in the world. To reach this goal, we need the cooperation and constructive work of the students as well.”, he said.

Dr. Péter Hermann, Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs talked about how the Students’ Union has always represented true values just like when accepting the renewed Study and Examination Regulation in 2019.

“The university is for the students, thus the presidency of the organization representing their interests has always played an important role in the life of the university. I would like to thank the outgoing leadership for their work and wish the new presidency a lot of success.”, Dr. Péter Hermann said.

Dr. Miklós Kellermayer, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine emphasized that the leaderships of both the university and the faculty have turned towards the students even more, which is reflected in the composition of the Faculty Council providing 25 percent student participation rate. He also thanked the work of the students in the past year, which was characterized by real professionalism.

Bálint Tripolszky and Dr. Szabolcs Lányi submitted their application for the position of the president of the Students’ Union, which was briefly presented to the participants of the meeting. Bálint Tripolszky, elected as president at the meeting talked about his goals.

“I want to ensure greater transparency, to reduce bureaucracy, to appoint a Vice-President for Educational Affairs and to strengthen the representation of interests on every year. Building closer ties with international organizations, reinforcing our Semmelweis identity as well as providing monthly occasions for direct meetings and conversations with the members of the Students’ Union are also among my objectives.”, he said.  

In addition to electing a new president and office holders of the organization, the student members of the senate were also selected.
