The Ministry of Human Resources has officially informed Rector Ágoston Szél that a ministerial decision has granted Semmelweis University the “Research University” status for the period 2013 to 2016. As is known, the university had held the prestigious title for the 2010-2013 period, as well.
A maximum of six universities may hold the “Research University” title, which comes with a grant of nearly 500 million forints (approx. EUR 1.7 million).
In addition to Semmelweis University, the following universities were classified “Research Universities” for the 2013-2016 period by Zoltán Balog, minister of Human Resources: Budapest University of Technology and Economics, the University of Debrecen, Eötvös Loránd University, the University of Pécs, and the University of Szeged.
According to Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education, “research” status may be granted to universities or university faculties, which provide superior training and are recognised by the academic community.
