Research project: Corneal wound healing after photorefractive excimer keratectomy and secondary UV-B irradiation
1999 – 2000 Moorfields Eye Hospital, London Fellowship in Orbital, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery of the Eye

Scientific and professional experience

In 1992 he introduced refractive surgery in Hungary. Experience and publications in all types of refractive surgery:

  • PRK (photorefractive keratectomy)
  • PTK (phototherapeutic keratectomy)
  • LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis)
  • Epi-LASIK
  • Femto-LASIK
  • LASEK

He has delivered more than 600 classroom and conference lectures, he has been the invited lecturer of several European and international congresses.
The number of refractive surgeries carried out by him is about 30.000, and the number of cataract surgical interventions made by him is 11,500.
He discovered the harmful effect of the ultraviolent radiation (solarium bed, sunbathing) in the phase of the avascular wound healing that follows the refractive surgical intervention (3-6 months after the refractive treatments). He published the result in the American Ophthalmology journal in 1997 that has become his most frequently cited publication since then.
He was the first in the world who performed femtolaser-assisted cataract surgery in August 2008. He published the experiences in international publications.
He was the organiser of the live surgery at the congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) in February 2010 in Budapest.
He organised a live femtolaser-assisted cataract surgery at Semmelweis University Department of Ophthalmology that was broadcasted at the congress of the ESCRS in Vienna in September 2011.
He organised live surgical interventions at the congress of the Hungarian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (SHIOL) in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, where he performed phacoemulsification- and femtolaserassisted cataract surgery for the congress participants.
