Semmelweis University’s largest international student event, Semmelweis Carnival, was organized for the ninth time this year. Nearly 2000 students from around 20 countries participated at the event, the aim of which was to bring the university’s Hungarian and foreign students together.
At the event organized at the Nagyvárad tér Theoretical Building, students were welcomed by General Vice-Rector Dr. Ferenc Bánhidy. He said he trusts that all students from all countries feel that they attend an excellent university, where they get the knowledge they desire. Foreign language students were welcomed by Dr. Attila Mócsai, Director of the Foreign Students’ Secretariat, and Dr. Andrea Székely, associate professor, who represented the German and English language programs.
The event also featured various music and dance productions, portraying the students’ own national cultures. First, a traditional Palestinian folk dance was performed, followed by African and Indian national dances. For the rest of the evening, Mongooz and the Magnet, Paddy and the Rats, Viktória Metzker, and many more DJs were responsible for the good mood.
Semmelweis Carnival, which is organized around a theme every year, was named “Carnival of Wonderland” this year. Following tradition, the Multicultural Food Festival was organized in the frame of the carnival, where gastronomic specialities of 20 nations were offered by foreign students dressed in folk costumes. Guests had the opportunity to taste, among others, German, Turkish, Japanese, Canadian and Swiss specialities, but the typical dishes of Hungarian cuisine were also not left out of the range.
Similarly to previous years, the event, whose main aim was to promote the encounter of cultures, was organized by the four biggest student organizations: Semmelweis University Student Union (HÖK), Instructive Interactive Group (IÖCS), International Student Association of Semmelweis (ISAS) and Deutschsprachige Studentenvertretung Semmelweis (DSVS).
