At the official opening of the event, Dr. Zoltán Benyó, President of the Doctoral Council, welcomed the audience. He noted that this was the most attended event organized by the Doctoral College, with around 700 participants registered from nine countries. In addition to doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows, this year, the scholarship holders of the EKÖP, EKÖP-KDP, and Semmelweis 250+ Excellence PhD Scholarship also presented their scientific activities and research in the framework of the PhD Scientific Days. “This conference is perhaps the most important scientific event of our institution, as the speakers here embody the future of science and research at Semmelweis University,” noted Dr. Zoltán Benyó.
During the welcome reception, Rector Dr. Béla Merkely described the conference as a celebration of excellence and the future. “Of the future, because you are going to be the next generation of our university’s researchers and lecturers; and of excellence, because we know very well that the scientific output of an institution depends largely on talented youth, on young PhD students.” He added that a researcher’s performance did not only depend on individual abilities: For talent and excellence to unfold their full potential, it was essential to provide the appropriate institutional support and infrastructure. He pointed out that for this reason, Semmelweis University considered doctoral training a top priority, and as a result, the number of enrolled students had doubled since the 2019/20 academic year, and that of international students had more than tripled. He also talked about the creation of the unified Doctoral College, the development of a divisional structure that corresponds to the different specialties, the enrolled student population of over 1,200, and the publication results that support the university’s position in the rankings. “The PhD Scientific Days provide an opportunity to present your research results, develop presentation skills, lay the foundations for collaborations, and expand your network of contacts. Today, truly outstanding results can only be achieved through teamwork and even cross-border cooperation,” Dr. Béla Merkely highlighted in his welcome address.
Over the three days, young researchers presented in 55 sessions, covering a wide range of medical disciplines, such as molecular medicine, dental research, surgical medicine, pathological and oncological sciences, pharmaceutical sciences and health technologies, health sciences, mental health sciences, theoretical and translational medicine, cardiovascular medicine, neurosciences, and conservative medicine.
The Doctoral Council’s Excellent PhD Supervisor Awards were presented during the plenary lectures. Dr. Tamás Radovits, Professor of the Department of Cardiology at the Városmajor Heart and Vascular Center, discussed the pathophysiology of the athlete’s heart; Dr. Miklós Kellermayer, Director of the Department of Biophysics and Radiobiology, talked about manipulating single molecules to understand biomedical phenomena; and Dr. Zoltán Jakus, Associate Professor at the Department of Physiology, covered organ-specific lymphatic vascular function in health and disease.
On the second day of the conference, the Semmelweis 250+ Excellence PhD Scholarship holders were recognized, and the event ended with the announcement of the most outstanding oral and poster presentations from the 55 sessions, which were evaluated by committees from 11 divisions of the Doctoral College.
