Semmelweis University is featured in 12 disciplines in the latest U.S. News Best Global Universities Rankings. The institution is ranked in the top 300 in half of the subjects listed, making it by far the best-performing Hungarian medical school. The greatest improvement compared to last year was achieved in the field of Clinical Medicine: Semmelweis University moved up 79 places to 181st position among the more than 2,000 institutions assessed. The university also moved up 10-50 places in the subjects Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Medical Imaging (174th), Pharmacology and Toxicology (216th), Oncology (232nd), Molecular Biology and Genetics (326th), and Psychiatry/Psychology (357th).
This year again, the university performed best in the category Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems, in which it was listed as 35th worldwide, one of the best in the region. It has surpassed institutions such as the National University of Singapore (NUS), KU Leuven, and the University of Munich. At the top of the list is Harvard University.
“In Cardiac and Cardiovascular Systems, we have made the greatest progress in the number of publications, including highly cited publications in the top 1 percent. We have also performed better in terms of scientific conferences, while we need to further strengthen our international collaborations,” said Dr. Béla Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University and Director of the Városmajor Heart and Vascular Center. He pointed out that cardiovascular disease was the most common public health problem and the leading cause of death not only in Hungary, but also in the European Union and worldwide.

The rector added that the ‘Városmajor 70’ construction project, which was scheduled to be completed this year, would open a new chapter in the life of the center: The expansion would make it the largest institution in the region in terms of patient volume and scientific output.
The university was ranked 190th in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 204th in Surgery, 410th in Biology and Biochemistry, 415th in Neuroscience and Behavior, and 1160th in Chemistry.
U.S. News & World Report is the oldest and best-known higher education ranking in the United States and the first US publisher to enter the global university rankings sector in 2014. Their latest global ranking lists the top 2,250 universities from 105 countries around the world. The list is based on 13 indicators selected by U.S. News to measure global research performance and their weightings.
