Semmelweis University landed in good positions in 8 subject areas of the 2022 “US News Best Global Universities” ranking. Semmelweis University achieved the best result in the category “cardiac and cardiovascular systems” (the only Hungarian university in this category) improving to 55th from 87th position last year. After its 112th place in 2020, Semmelweis University was able to advance 57 places in two years and left universities such as the Heidelberg University, Cambridge University and Utrecht University behind. Harvard University continues to dominate the list.
The indicators show that Semmelweis University has a distinguished place in the cardiovascular scientific category, as it has the world’s 4th internationally most cited publications. This indicator shows the percentage of all the scientific publications of Semmelweis University in this topic, which belong to 1% of the most cited publications of the world. Semmelweis University is ranked 6th in international collaboration and 15th in “normalized citation impact” within the cardiology and cardiovascular systems category. The “normalized citation impact” indicator reflects the number of papers that have been assigned as being in the top 10% of the most highly cited papers in the world for their respective fields.
One of the most cited authors between 2016-2020 in the category “cardiology and cardiovascular systems” are rector dr. Béla Merkely, head of the Heart and Vascular Center (number of citations: 3540, publications: 181, “Highly Cited” publications: 5), dr. Péter Ferdinandy, Vice Rector for science and innovation and head of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy (number of citations: 1712, publications: 30, “Highly Cited publications”:7) and dr. Pál Maurovich Horvat, head of the Medical Imaging Center, and head of the Department of Radiology (Citations: 836, number of publications: 68).
Semmelweis University has also made significant progress in the category “Endocrinology and metabolism” and maintained its spot as the best Hungarian university, standing at the 121th. The university has improved its rank in the indicator “the percentage of highly cited papers that are among the top 1% most cited”. Furthermore, within the discipline of Endocrinology and metabolism, Semmelweis University is in the world’s top 100 in “conferences”, “normalized citation impact” and “international collaboration”.
SU also significantly improved its position in “Biology and Biochemistry” (312nd place), Cell Biology (198th place), Clinical Medicine (198th place), Molecular Biology and Genetics (344th place) and it is ranked 324th in Neuroscience and Behavior and 218th in Oncology.
