The congress of the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology was held in Hungary for the first time with over 1,800 participants coming from 83 countries. The event was organized by Dr. László Bucsi, former associate professor of Semmelweis University’s Department of Orthopaedics, and director of the Szent György University Teaching Hospital in Fejér county.
The congress featured two cadaver courses on the first day organized by Semmelweis University’s Department of Orthopaedics in collaboration with the 1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research and the 2nd Department of Pathology.
The courses focused on current topics of orthopaedic surgery, including revision hip replacement and shoulder arthroscopy courses delivered by the university.
With the increasing number of joint replacements, the number of the loose implant replacements is also rising. This leads to more and more arthroplasties requiring re-operation around the implant worldwide. Hip and knee prostheses function properly for 15-20 years on average, then they need to be replaced.
26 international participants led by 8 lecturers performed acetabular reconstruction at 4 workstations in two shifts. The replacement of the acetabulum, the main pelvic joint was performed on cadavers, while femoral reconstructive interventions were performed on two other workstations.
The workshop was attended by Dr. András Kiss, Director of the 2nd Department of Pathology, Dr. László Bucsi, Persident of SICOT Orthopaedic World Congress, Head of the Local Organizing Committee and Dr. Fabio Sciaretta, Director of SICOT cadaver courses. The course was led by Dr. Ákos Zahár, Head Physician from Szent György University Teaching Hospital.
The other course focused on shoulder arthroscopy, a diagnostic and therapeutic procedure that has revolutionized shoulder surgery in the past 20-25 years accounting for 90% of all shoulder surgeries today. The SICOT congress included the shoulder arthroscopy cadaver course in response to this trend. The course was hosted in the 1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research headed by Dr. András Matolcsy and the participants were welcomed by Dr. Gergely Rácz.
24 participants attended the workshop and learnt the basics of shoulder arthroscopy at 4 workstations from 8 instructors. The professional program was put together by Dr. Gábor Skaliczki, Associate Professor of Semmelweis University’s Department of Orthopaedics and lead instructor of the course, Dr. László Bucsai and Dr. Fabio Sciaretta, which included a 1-hour-long theoretical lecture followed by a 1.5-hour-long workshop enabling students to learn the use of the instruments used in shoulder arthroscopy. Afterwards, students could use the acquired knowledge and practice the procedure on cadavers under the guidance of instructors for nearly 3 hours. The technical background was provided by OrthoVision.
