On the occasion of the Hungarian Civic Revolution and War of Independence of 1848–1849 the President of Hungary, János Áder handed out distinctions of the Hungarian Order of Merit.
Among the recipients were four professors and two professor emeritae of Semmelweis University. The decision on the distinctions was published in the Hungarian Gazette on 15 March 2021. Due to the current epidemiological situation the awards will be handed over at a later date.
Civil division of the Middle Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit
The award was granted to dr. Veronika Ádám (Széchenyi and Batthyány-Strattmann László Prize winning doctor, biochemist, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, professor emerita of Semmelweis University) in recognition of her decades-long internationally recognized research in the field of oxidative stress of nerves.
Dr. Zsuzsanna Schaff (Széchenyi and Batthyány-Strattmann László Prize winning doctor, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, professor emerita of Semmelweis University, former head of the 2nd Department of Pathology of the Faculty of Medicine of Semmelweis University)
received the award in recognition of her decades-long outstanding career in teaching and research, in particular her internationally significant research achievements in the field of viruses causing hepatitis.
Civil division of the Officer’s Cross Order of the Hungarian Order of Merit
Dr. Zoltán Zsolt Nagy (Batthyány-Strattmann László Prize winning ophthalmologist, doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, head of the Department of Ophthalmology of Semmelweis University, professor, former dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences) was awarded in recognition of his internationally recognized career in ophthalmology and for laying the foundations of the PhD studies of the Faculty of Health Sciences of Semmelweis University.
Dr. Péter Nyirády (doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, head and professor of the Urology Department of Semmelweis University) was granted the award in recognition of his decades-long researcher and academic career and medical work, in particular his outstanding achievements in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery and laparoscopic urology.
Dr. Péter Sótonyi (head and professor of the Department of Vascular Surgery of Semmelweis University, deputy director of Városmajor Heart and Vascular Centre)
was given the award in recognition of his academic work of teaching the future generation of doctors using his unique approach and experiences, treating patients with a great degree of professionalism. His decades-long voluntary work as a paramedic and his charitable activities were also praised.
Civil division of the Knight`s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit
Dr. László Entz (vascular surgeon, professor of the Department of Vascular Surgery of Városmajor Heart and Vascular Centre and former head of the Department of Vascular Surgery and Angiology of the Professional Healthcare Association) received the knight’s cross in recognition of his activities in introducing the eversion technique of vascular surgery in Hungary and due to his active role in the professional sphere.
