The Senate of Semmelweis University expressed its support in a decree passed at its January 28, 2021 meeting – with 41 votes in favor and one abstention – for the operation of the university, including its six faculties, public education and vocational institutions, as well as its clinical center forming an organic unit with its medical and health sciences training, to operate in the future under the direction of a public-interest foundation established by the state. In order to provide transparent communication about the change in operating model, the university has set up an interactive information website.

The university’s main decisionmaking body, the Senate, discussed the proposal on changing the operating model of Semmelweis University, which was previously reviewed by the faculties, the Clinical Center, the School of PhD Studies, the Public Sector Employee Council, the interest and student organizations, as well as the central directorates-general. At its January 28, 2021 meeting, the body expressed its support for the university, including its six faculties, public education and vocational institutions, as well as its clinical center forming an organic unit with its medical and health sciences training, to change its operating model. To implement the change, the state will establish a public-interest asset management foundation which will then take over the operating rights of Semmelweis University.

The change in operating model will not affect the type, composition and amount of state-financed trainings offered, and the university’s social-security financed patient care activity will also continue unchanged. At the same time, the model change – by establishing a more flexible institutional framework and structure – will contribute to achieving the goal of making Semmelweis University one of the top 100 universities in the world, and one of the top five universities in Europe in its field, as well as significantly improving the quality of patient care it can provide.

In addition to conducting regular meetings and discussions with interest and student organizations, the leadership of the university feels it is particularly important to continuously inform Semmelweis Citizens. As a first step, it has set up an interactive information website about the model change, where anyone can submit questions, based on which a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) and answers will be compiled and regularly updated.
