International students representing 10 universities presented 50 presentations at the Semmelweis International Students’ Conference, which was held in the framework of the Students’ Scientific Association (TDK) Conference organized for medical students of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. As Prof. Dr. Béla Merkely, Vice-Rector for Clinical Affairs and President of the TDK Council said during his opening speech, this was the fourth time when three practical sections were added to the international part of the conference: a laparoscopy contest, a pharmacy contest named after János Kabay as well as a dentistry contest named after Jolán Bánóczy. During these practical sections students had the opportunity to test their practical problem-solving skills besides proving their theoretical knowledge.

During the opening of the conference Prof. Dr. Merkely handed over the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding to Dr. Abramov Alexey, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine of the People’s Friendship University. The collaboration between Semmelweis University and the Russian university has started since more than half a decade.

“The most important responsibilities of teachers are to find the most talented students and to transfer the attitude and approach that makes them successful researchers. Talent alone is not enough: without dedication and diligence it is like an unfertile seed in the soil lacking water.”, emphasized Prof. Dr. Merkely.

“We have been attending the Semmelweis International Students’ Conference for seven years, it is truly an outstanding event for us, as it is very important for students to make the first step towards the international scientific world. Nowadays the most crucial fact for students is to find answers for many questions: who they would like to become, which profession they would like to choose and what they can do in order to reach their goal. The teachers are dedicated to provide help for students in finding their place in the world of medicine.”, expressed Dr. Abramov Alexey.

The opening lecture of the Semmelweis International Students’ Conference was held by Dr. Zhanna D. Kobalava, Head of Department of Internal Medicine, the Department of Cardiology and the Department of Clinical Pharmacology at People’s Friendship University, the title of which was Organ dysfunction in heart failure: overview, current approach and future directions.
