On 20 November 2019, a delegation led by He Wei, Vice-Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee and Chief Medical Expert of the China Primary Health Care Foundation (CPHCF), visited the university. During the visit, possibilities for cooperation in the field of healthcare were discussed.

At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Marcel Pop, Head of the Directorate of International Relations, presented Semmelweis University, with special regard to the institution’s Chinese relations and the areas of potential future cooperation. He Wei, head of the Chinese delegation, expressed his hope that the current visit could contribute to the further development of Chinese-Hungarian relations in health care. He then briefly presented the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and the eight-year medical training conducted there, drawing the attention of Semmelweis University’s leadership to the possibility of cooperation with the institution. He explained that great emphasis is laid on practical training, which is conducted in the six hospitals and 18 research centres that joined the academy.

Dr. Zhen Chen, President of the Central European Traditional Chinese Medicine Cooperative Association, H. E. Jielong Duan, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Budapest, and Zhenhua Liu, Head of the Political Section at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Budapest, were also present at the meeting. Dr. Péter Hermann, Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, said: ‘Semmelweis University is open to developing existing collaborations as well as to establishing new ones’.

Subsequently, Wu Peixin, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, called attention once again to the possibility of collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Semmelweis University, adding that they focus primarily on three areas: biochemistry, clinical work, and the application of biomechanics, medical robotics and artificial intelligence to clinical work.

Guan Yingxin, Secretary General of the Beijing Advanced Medical Equipment Industry Innovation Alliance, briefly introduced his institution, which brings together a number of research teams. He considered it promising that Semmelweis University was also planning to set up a similar centre, which would provide another opportunity for cooperation between the two countries.

At the end of the meeting, Dr. Zoltán Zsolt Nagy spoke about the situation of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hungary. He said that cooperation with the Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine began 7 years ago, and the graduates are licensed to legally practice Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hungary. He added that Semmelweis University is planning to implement significant improvements in this field in the near future. Afterwards, he thanked Jielong Duan and Dr. Zhen Chen for providing significant help in this area.

The Chinese delegation was received by Dr. Péter Hermann, Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, Dr. Miklós Kellermayer, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Zoltán Zsolt Nagy, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Marcel Pop, Director of International Relations, and Diána Módos, International Project Coordinator.
