Between November 3 and 6, 2025, a delegation from Semmelweis University, led by Vice-Rector for International Studies Dr. Alán Alpár, completed a highly successful visit to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) in Guangzhou and Shanwei. The trip strengthened institutional ties, opened new research and educational horizons, and laid a solid foundation for long-term, mutually beneficial collaboration.

Sun Yat-sen University is one of the country’s leading research universities, ranked among the global top 150 institutions. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital, established in 1835, holds the distinction of being China’s first Western-style medical hospital, pioneering clinical care and medical education in the region. Today, it operates as the university’s one of five major affiliated hospitals, renowned for its excellence in oncology, immunology, and translational medicine research, as well as for its advanced clinical training programs.

During the opening day, the delegation participated in the 190th Anniversary Celebration of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital in Guangzhou. As part of the festivities, Semmelweis University and SYSU signed a Memorandum of Understanding, marking an important milestone in cooperative development. The ceremony gathered senior leadership figures from both institutions and local authorities, emphasizing the strong support for closer academic and clinical collaboration.

The delegation also engaged in scientific activities throughout the visit, most notably at the Golden Bay Summit on Cancer Immunotherapy in Shanwei. Semmelweis experts, including Dr. Alán Alpár and Dr. Gábor Varga delivered lectures highlighting Semmelweis University’s excellence in translational medicine, immunology, and clinical research, contributing to high-level scientific dialogue. The forums encouraged new research synergies, future joint publications, and plans for student mobility and clinical training programs.

Throughout the visit, representatives of both institutions emphasized their shared commitment to advancing medical science, training the next generation of healthcare professionals, and addressing global health challenges through joint innovation. The discussions clearly demonstrated that Semmelweis University and Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital are well-aligned in strategic vision, ranging from translational research and oncology to clinical education and technology transfer.

Semmelweis delegation returned to Budapest with rich scientific impressions and a renewed dedication to expanding cooperation. Both sides expressed confidence that the partnership will continue to flourish in the coming years, enabling impactful research collaborations, talent development, and improved global health outcomes.
