In the latest part of our alumni interview series, Dr. Med Argyris Michaelides, a consultant dermatologist with many years of experience in Germany and founder of DC Dermatologicum, the largest skin clinic in Cyprus, a state-of-the-art skin and laser center, talks about the advancement of his career and what being a Semmelweis alumnus means to him.

What made you decide to pursue dermatology and laser surgery?

I was first drawn to the field of dermatology by the opportunities to truly help my patients. I was enthused by the idea of satisfying both medical and esthetic concerns and improving the quality of my patients’ lives. As I continued in specialty, I was further captured by the cutting-edge technology of laser surgery and its practical applications in skin rejuvenation and cancer treatment.

Can you tell us the story of how you founded your own private skin clinic?

I came from a family with a lot of healthcare workers, so I was introduced to the concepts of medicine rather early. I remember studying as a young man and especially admiring my uncle, a cardiologist and director of a large clinic in Greece. As I progressed in my studies, and later in my career, his advice would also lead me to find a passion in administration and business. From the sparking of this passion and its alignment with hard work, I would find myself attracting cosmetics clients, which inspired me to open my own small space. At that time, I could not imagine it growing into what we are running today.

Do you have some good advice for students who are thinking about launching their own business in the medical field, just like you did?

Starting a business in any field of medicine is a significant but rewarding challenge. There are several tips I can offer in the hope of enhancing students’ experience.

Focus on patient-centered care: They say you should follow your passion and success will follow. In the medical field, our passion is found in our patients. Regardless of your specialty area, always prioritize patient care and outcomes. Patient care is not only a crucial focus for ethical reasons, but it will also foster long-term business success.

Understand the patient’s journey: Whether you are providing medical services, products, or technology, understanding the patient’s experience will set you apart from your colleagues. During an initial consultation, the patient leaves all the clues to their diagnosis or a roadmap to successful treatment; you must listen.

Commit to continuous learning: The medical field is a continuously evolving one, with new research, treatments, and regulations emerging constantly. Stay committed to lifelong learning through continuing medical education opportunities or by subscribing to relevant journals.

Collaboration is key to ensuring the business is successful and medically compliant. Starting a medical business requires dedication, knowledge, and resilience, but it is immensely beneficial.

Would you like to expand your career somehow? Do you see any potential for development somewhere?

As a dermatologist and entrepreneur, the expansion of a healthcare business is limitless! Teledermatology is an area we have recently tapped into. With advancements in technology, virtual consultations have brought distant patients closer. AI-powered analysis and imaging devices ensure we can examine and consult with our patients from anywhere in the world.

Research & development is an area well worth exploring. New treatments, products, and devices are still awaiting development and discovery. I advise future physicians to pay attention to every defect and observe it as an area for them to perfect.

Finally, I have learnt that medicine can truly be combined with any other passion. My love for acquiring real estate is one that I hope to continue to explore and combine with my medical background.

What is your proudest achievement relating to your career?

Daily, I marvel at the progress we have made in the clinics. Reflection on where we were versus where we are now gives me great pride. I am even prouder of the legacy and influence created for my children, who are now preparing to embrace their own journeys into the field of medicine.

What type of treatment is your favorite to perform?

My favorite and most beneficial procedure is Mohs surgery. It’s a precise and effective procedure that allows me to address cancerous tissue while preserving healthy tissue. With a rise in cancer cases on the island of Cyprus, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of these procedures, and the pride felt when a biopsy confirms you have caught a lesion in time.

I also enjoy laser treatment for skin rejuvenation. It is satisfying to get a chance to connect with happy patients and help them meet their most confident selves.

You studied both in Hungary and in Germany. What did you learn in these places that still influences your life now?

My experience in different places has shaped me in many ways. From medical school to residency, I have gained a deep appreciation for the complexity of skin diseases and the importance of a thorough diagnosis. Training in different hospitals exposed me to a diverse patient population, helping me develop a strong clinical judgment and adaptability.

Working in private practice, I have learned the value of long-term relationships with patients, understanding their concerns beyond just medical treatment, and the joys of watching them feel confident in their skins. All of these experiences continue to shape me as a dermatologist today, pushing me to stay curious, compassionate, and dedicated to improving skin health.

What does being a Semmelweis alumnus mean to you?

Being a Semmelweis alumnus is truly a privilege. It means being part of a prestigious institution with a strong tradition in medical excellence, research, and innovation. Semmelweis is known for rigorous training and emphasis on hands-on clinical experience, which shaped me into a well-rounded dermatologist.

The foundations I received at Semmelweis continue to influence my approach to medicine, from my diagnostic skills to my commitment to lifelong learning. It’s an honor to be associated with such a respected institution.

Do you have a motto at your clinic or a vision you try to pursue?

Just be one percent better today than you were yesterday.

Often, aiming for perfection paralyzes us as we go along our journey. At my clinics, there are employees from various backgrounds and walks of life, but they are here for a common goal. The best way for us to achieve that common goal is to focus on it and encourage them to be just a little better than yesterday. This seemingly small progression will have a great impact over time.

How often do Hungarian-speaking visitors come to your clinic?

Cyprus is an island welcoming diversity, whether for work or vacation. The Hungarian community is significant and a great support to my clinic.

Do you have any hobbies that help you unwind and recharge after workdays?

As a dermatologist, balancing work with personal time is essential. After work I enjoy activities that help me unwind and regain energy. Some of my favorite pastimes include reading and research. I have a passion for staying up to date with dermatologic advancements, nutrition, politics, and architecture. I also enjoy spending time with family and loved ones, which is essential for maintaining this balance.
