ShanghaiRanking’s 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has been published, which classifies institutions in 55 different subjects within five main disciplines (Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, Social Sciences).
Semmelweis University has become the top-ranked Hungarian university in all seven subject rankings relevant to its fields of activity. In Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, the institution has significantly improved its ranking compared to last year, making it into the top 100. The first spot is held by Harvard University, followed by Peking Union Medical College in China and the University of Naples Federico II in Italy. The University of Szeged is ranked 301-400 and the University of Debrecen 401-500.
In Clinical Medicine, Semmelweis remains firmly in the top 200. This list is also led by Harvard University, followed by the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of Pennsylvania. Among Hungarian universities, the University of Szeged has also made the list, ranking 201-300.
Semmelweis University has also retained its place in the top 300 in Dentistry & Oral Sciences. This list is again led by a US university, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, followed by King’s College London in the UK and the University of Washington. The University of Szeged, like Semmelweis, is in the top 300.
Just as last year, Semmelweis is again in the top 300 in Medical Technology. The list is led by Harvard University, Stanford University, and Johns Hopkins University, with no other Hungarian higher education institution having made the list.
Semmelweis has improved its position in several subject rankings: One category in Human Biological Sciences and two categories in Biological Sciences, so it is now in the top 300 in both. Harvard University tops both lists. For the former, among Hungarian universities, Eötvös Loránd University is in the 301-400 and the University of Debrecen in the 401-500 position, while for the latter, the University of Szeged is in the top 300 and the University of Pécs in the top 500.
Semmelweis was included in the Public Health ranking for the second time this year, now in the top 500. Harvard University also tops this list, followed by two British universities, the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and University College London.
“Semmelweis University continues to be the leading higher education institution in Hungary and the region and is unique in the world as a medical and health sciences university. In most of its specialties, it is among the best in the region: It is the best university in Central and Eastern Europe in Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, while in Clinical Medicine, Dentistry & Oral Sciences, Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, and Human Biological Sciences, it ties for the position of the best-ranked university in the region,” Rector Dr. Béla Merkely said.
As the rector added:
It is a source of great pride that our university has been able to move forward in an incredibly fast-growing and competitive field such as Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and become one of the top 100 universities in the world in it. Our Center for Pharmacology and Drug Research & Development, established last year, could play a role in this, as it coordinates pharmacology education across faculties and makes research and development in the field even more effective. I am confident that the center will help us to achieve even better results in the future. This new ranking again proves that Semmelweis University is a true knowledge center, whose excellence is based on the triad of education, patient care, and research & innovation, as well as a translational approach and internationality.
The methodology of ShanghaiRanking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects has been significantly revised this year, with the introduction of the indicator termed World-Class Faculty, which includes the contributions of the most distinguished researchers, and World-Class Output, which relates to high-profile publications and awards. In addition, the weighting of several previous indicators has also changed.
