Dr. Béla Merkely has been re-appointed as rector for another five years by Hungarian President Katalin Novák. The ceremony took place on 9th May at the Sándor Palace. The appointment came after the Senate of Budapest’s Semmelweis University re-nominated him for the position on 26th January 2023 with a 36:8 majority. Professor Béla Merkely is a Széchenyi Prize-winning doctor, director of the Heart and Vascular Centre in Városmajor, and has been the rector of Semmelweis University since 2018.

During his first term as rector, Dr. Béla Merkely renewed and implemented the new medical and health sciences curriculum, further strengthening the role of practical, bedside education. The Times Higher Education (THE) world ranking also included Semmelweis University in the top 250 universities and it is now in the top 1% of the world’s 28,000 universities. The main goal of his second term is to make Semmelweis University the number one medical and health science training centre in Central Europe. He hopes that by 2030 it will be among the top hundred universities in the world and one of the five best medical higher education institutions in Europe.
