Senate members of Semmelweis University elected Dr. Béla Merkely, Head of Department Professor, Director of the Heart and Vascular Centre in Városmajor, Széchenyi Prize-winning physician, and current rector of the university as the candidate for Rector by a secret ballot with a vote of 36:8.

The Senate hearing of Dr. Miklós Kellermayer and Dr. Béla Merkely, who submitted their applications for the rectorship of Semmelweis University took place on 26 January 2023. By secret ballot, the Senate elected Dr. Béla Merkely, Head of Department Professor, Director of the Heart and Vascular Centre in Városmajor, Széchenyi Prize-winning physician, and current rector of the university, as the candidate for Rector.

In accordance with Act CCIV of 2011 on National Higher Education (Nftv.), the university submits the proposal for the rector candidate to the maintainer. The proposal for the rector’s mandate is forwarded by the Head of the National Foundation for Health and Medical Education to the President of Hungary through the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, who will appoint the new rector for a 5-year term of office from 1 July 2023.
