This year’s Summer Universiade has been one of the most successful college/university world tournaments for the Hungarian team to date, according to Dr. Miklós Tóth, dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences. After spending several days at the competitions in Shenzhen, he contended that many people underestimate the World University Games, though considering its size and quality, it rivals the Olympics. More than eight thousand athletes took part in the competition, including several Olympic and World champions.

A total of 104 Hungarian athletes from 33 different higher education institutions participated in the Shenzhen event, nearly a quarter of whom were Semmelweis University students.

Dr. Miklós Tóth pointed out that the team which travelled to China is one of the strongest in recent years, thanks to the support of the Hungarian University Sports Federation, the Hungarian Olympic Committee and the State Secretariat for Sports.

Hungarian athletes competed in 16 different sports, namely aerobics, archery, athletics, basketball, fencing, gymnastics, judo, rhythmic gymnastics, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, water polo, weightlifting, and windsurfing, earning five gold, two silver and four bronze medals. Altogether, Hungary has collected 117 gold, 94 silver and 102 bronze medals in the Summer Universiade to date.
