Vice President of the European Commission Neelie Kroes visited Semmelweis University on May 10 as part of her working visit to Hungary, in order to become acquainted with some of the research and development work being conducted at the University.
Accompanied by Dr. Miklós Réthelyi, Minister of National Resources, Dr. Kroes was received by Dr. Miklós Tóth, Vice Rector for Science and Innovation and Dr. Gusztáv Stubnya, Director General of Strategic Development and Management Affairs.
Dr. Kroes was introduced to two of the University’s most important current R&D projects at a meeting held in the Senate Hall. First, the development of the intelligent surgical device was presented by Dr. Zoltán Takáts, after which Dr. Péter Bartha provided an overview of the development and current state of the Health Research Data Analyzer and Biobank Data Manager softwares. Developed at the Department of Pulmonology, these latter softwares allow, for example, the Biobank of Pulmonary Diseases to access millions of patient data in a searchable, backend database.
Dr. Kroes’s visit concluded with a tour of the 1st Department of Pathology and Experimental Cancer Research by Director András Matolcsy, including its cutting-edge classroom equipped with a 3D microscopy system and its newly renovated autopsy room.
