EIT Health AMR DetecTool
01/01/2020 – 31/12/2022
Antibiotic resistance is an important global public health challenge. If appropriate measures are not taken, we could lose control of infectious diseases and face a return to the pre-antibiotic era. To use antibiotics only when required and stem the rise of resistant pathogens, it is essential to prescribe the appropriate drug. Therefore, new, rapid and easy-to-use diagnostic tools to detect multiresistant bacteria are urgently needed.
The AMR DetecTool, the new detection system will allow the direct detection of the multiresistant bacteria in clinical samples, thereby the process of detecting is shortened to 30 minutes. Current methods take 16-32 hours and require isolated bacteria. Rapid detection allows the start treatment quickly, saving lives and costs.
The objectives of the project:
- Clinically validating 5 tests using the DetecTool device (Carba-5, CTXM-multi, Van A/B, OXA-Ab, 3GC) at 10 European Hospitals
- Development of new diagnostic pathways in hospitals for faster and more efficient detection and treatment of patients with multiresistant bacteria
- Demonstrating the cost-saving financial impact of using rapid AMR tests in hospitals
- Creating a knowledge portal to support hospital implementation and best practice
- Launching the global commercialization of the products
