Health Care Quality and Patient Safety Management (MSc)

Training Objectives

The aim of the MSc in Health Care Quality and Patient Safety Management is to train professionals who possess well-founded, methodologically grounded practical knowledge in the design and operation of quality management systems in health care institutions.

Graduates will be able to recognise and identify situations and risks that may endanger the safety of patients and health care professionals, and, based on their assessment, develop improvement proposals and determine the measures to be implemented. They will also be able to design and manage quality management, patient safety and risk management programmes.

Program Description

The primary goal of health care providers is to heal. However, a poorly positioned hospital bed, an improperly stored needle or incorrectly administered medication can sometimes cause more harm than the original illness. With dedicated and well-trained professionals, such incidents can be prevented.

Health care decision-makers worldwide, including in Hungary, have placed quality management high on their agenda. Through increasingly stringent legislation, professional and operational requirements, and regulatory frameworks, they seek to promote the safe recovery and treatment of patients.

The Health Care Quality and Patient Safety Management programme provides students with a practical toolkit, tips and techniques for designing, managing and improving health care processes, implementing measures, and supporting management activities. In addition to theoretical knowledge, students develop practical skills and a process-oriented approach that can be effectively applied in their professional environment.

Upon completion of the programme, students will be able to

• adopt a process-oriented approach;
• assess and evaluate problems related to the quality and safety of care in their own institution, as well as their underlying causes;
• identify hazards that may lead to errors in the course of professional activities;
• make operational and professional processes safer;
• formulate well-founded improvement proposals; plan and manage the necessary changes using appropriate management tools; assess and evaluate their impact; and, in doing so, avoid unnecessary expenditure;
• understand the key principles of quality management and patient safety programs and their role in implementing such programs;
• introduce and operate quality management systems in their own professional environment.

Target Group

The program is intended for applicants who hold a higher education degree in a health care profession, have more than three years of practical experience in health care, and are, above all, committed to building a safer health care system.

The target group includes professionals working in hospitals, outpatient specialist clinics, general practitioner practices, community pharmacies, and health care sector administration, as well as professionals providing other health care services, such as laboratory and diagnostic imaging services.
