Stipendium Hungaricum, the most prestigious higher education scholarship programme of the Hungarian Government, offers a wide range of courses for international students of excellent academic track record. The scholarship aims to support the internationalization of the Hungarian higher education and its constant development, to strengthen international relations of the academic and research community, and to promote the good reputation and competitiveness of Hungarian higher education throughout the world.

Mission of the Programme

The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme was established in 2013 by the Hungarian Government to promote the internationalisation of Hungarian higher education and to attract top foreign students from all around the world who can establish personal and professional attachments to Hungary while enjoying high quality education in the heart of Europe.

The programme is based on bilateral educational cooperation agreements signed between the Ministries responsible for education in the sending countries/territories and Hungary or between institutions. Currently more than 50 Sending Partners are engaged in the programme across 4 different continents.

Students can apply for study programmes at bachelor, master and doctoral level, and preparatory courses as well. Apart from the tuition-free education, the Programme provides monthly stipend, medical insurance and housing allowance for the scholarship holders.

Language of the Programme

Most students choose programmes in English, but Semmelweis University has study programmes in German as well.

Non eligibility

Applications will not be considered in the following cases: 

  • Hungarian citizens (including those with dual citizenships)
  • former Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship holders, who are re-applying for studies in the same cycle of education (e.g. bachelor, master, doctoral)
