Professor Honoris Causa

Semmelweis University established the title of Professor Honoris Causa (Honorary Professor) in 2026. The Senate may award the title upon the rector’s recommendation to Hungarian or non-Hungarian individuals who hold an academic degree and have outstanding international teaching experience. The recognition is awarded for teaching activities in the field of medical and health sciences or other scientific disciplines at Semmelweis University or at related higher education institutions and clinical training sites, such as undergraduate and graduate programs and residency training.

The distinction recognizes university faculty members and researchers who, through their international reputation, outstanding professional expertise, and decades of experience, contribute to the university’s educational and research activities; have participated in undergraduate and doctoral education for at least twenty years and have conducted teaching and research activities as visiting professors on multiple occasions; possess extensive international ties and recognition, have facilitated internationally recognized achievements; and have enhanced the university’s reputation through their innovative and inventive work. The award may also be given to internationally renowned individuals who have previously contributed significantly to Semmelweis University’s training programs as visiting professors.

The holder of the title of Professor Honoris Causa supports the work of the university’s leadership by offering advice and opinion upon request; participates in the work of committees and the drafting of proposals; is involved in teaching and research, as well as in the training of the next generation of scientists; may offer courses or special lectures on specific topics to students; and assists in fostering and developing the university’s international relations.
