The Department of Emergency Medicine is the central emergency care center for Budapest and the surrounding region. With over 250 employees, it plays a key role in undergraduate, postgraduate, and specialist medical training, and functions as a scientific research hub. Our mission is to continuously enhance the quality of patient care, education, and scientific work.

The Emergency Department of Semmelweis University began operations in 2016 as part of the Korányi Project, housed in the newly constructed Central Patient Care Building of the External Clinical Block. Operating 24/7 every day of the year, it serves as an acute care unit, providing emergency services to walk-in and ambulance patients. As the emergency center of both the University and the capital, its tasks include the admission, triage, stabilization, and often definitive treatment of patients requiring urgent care. This service is provided through collaboration across multiple medical specialties, which are involved as needed.

The establishment of the Emergency Department is credited to Dr. Péter Kanizsai, who led the unit from 2016 to 2018. He was succeeded by Dr. Tamás Berényi, under whose leadership from 2019 to 2021 the department expanded significantly in terms of staff and patient volume. In 2021, under the leadership of Dr. Csaba Varga, the integration of the Emergency Department with the Department of Emergency Medicine and Oxiology created the Department of Emergency Medicine, which now functions as a center for patient care, education, and research.

Since January 2025, the department has been led by Dr. Bánk Fenyves.
