For the most of us, December is mainly about Advent, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. This also appears concerning the world-days: while we can find lots of interesting world-days during the year, in December we can hardly find some. In my article, I collected the most exciting world-days in December.

World AIDS Day: 1 December

AIDS – Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome – is caused by HIV (however not everyone who is infected by HIV has AIDS). AIDS is considered as a seperate disease since 1 December 1981. It is no suprise, that WHO chose this day as World AIDS Day in 1988. The aim of this day is to fight against AIDS and to destroy prejudice against people afflicted by the disease. More than 30 millions of people carry HIV worldwide, so it is beyond important to abolish prejudice caused by fear and to sensitize people. The symbol of the battle against AIDS is the red ribbon.

Human Rights Day: 10 December

The Universal Decleration of Human Rights was adopted on 10 December in 1948 by the United Nations. In 1950, 10 December was declared as World Human Rights Day.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Day: The third Friday in December

This day was launched in the USA in 2011, and soon became really popular in Europe as well. England was the first to adopt this day designated for sweaters before Christmas, Hungary also joined in 2012. This day does not have an actual date, it takes place on the third Friday in December every year: in 2020, it will be on 18 December. It is a great occasion to wear our ugliest Christmas sweater found in the bottom of our wardrobe and to get into the Christmas Spirit. On this day, many charity events are organized: someplace sweaters are distributed among the poor, while elsewhere the ugliest pieces are sold by auction and the grand total is assigned to charity.
