The András Pető Faculty (PAK) of Semmelweis University as the sole holder of András Pető’s legacy is the international knowledge and resource centre of conductive education for the whole world.

The Faculty is continuously working on developing its education programs in Hungarian and English  and cooperations with other higher education institutions. It provides modern, practice-oriented training for trainers, and also implements adult education programs in the spirit of integrity and completeness, both nationally and internationally.

EDUCATION – MORE THAN 40 PERCENT PRACTICE

The aim of the Faculty’s bachelor’s degree is to train professionals with modern general and conductive pedagogical knowledge. The training prepares the conductor for the holistic development of the personality of a disabled person of any age. Theory and practice are inseparably integrated. The practice areas include conductive pedagogy and rehabilitation, pre-school education, school teaching and learning, professional service and professional service activities.

The conductor BA program is an 8-semester-long training including 43 percent practice of the total education hours which puts our program amongst the best in Europe and perhaps in the world. (On average, the proportion of practical training is less than 20 percent in special education and around 10 percent in teacher training. This compares with 43% at the András Pető Faculty.) Major curricular components are: education history, education science, special education, anatomy of neuro-system and musculoskeletal system, psychology in general, development psychology, neuro psychology, conductive education. Students who have finished their studies have the opportunity to work in conductors’ team, or in multi-professional teams in education, rehabilitation or health institutions.

More than 2000 students graduated since this training has started. Among these students there are Hungarian as well as international students, since the 1980’s.

SERVICES

The development program adopts the special Pető method whose essence is teaching those in need to adapt and integrate to circumstances of daily living. The Faculty offers intensive individual and group sessions to train clients how to overcome challenges of everyday life from simple actions to more complex activities: from lacing shoes through using cutlery to independent movement forms. INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION

In the long history of the faculty, the reputation of conductive pedagogy, a special profession, has spread to many parts of the world. In Western Europe, North America and even Australia, many conductive centres have been established and are still in operation. Conductor is a well-known profession, especially among people with CP and rehabilitation professionals. A wide range of career opportunities await our graduates not only in Hungary but worldwide.

In the meantime, the Faculty is continuously developing its international links in higher education, research and services. We have established higher education partnerships in Germany, Romania and Croatia – for student and faculty exchange programs, joint conferences and projects. In the USA, we run an off-campus programme together with Aquinas College. And foreign students are constantly coming to the Faculty’s practice areas to complete their internships.

In the field of research, we have become a member of the EUniWell project, where we are carrying out scientific research with several other European universities. And the Centre for National and International Services is working intensively not only on our projects outside our borders, but also in several other countries, such as Kazakhstan and Chile.
