Within the framework of the mental and psychological health programs, Semmelweis University staff and students have the opportunity to receive individual consultations and group sessions (e.g. stress management, burnout prevention), and colleagues can also participate in career coaching.
Mental health has a complex meaning. It involves abilities such as managing change, responding to thoughts and negative and positive emotions, accepting and communicating them. It extends to the ability to create and maintain relationships, and to manage stress. In today’s fast-paced, task-filled world, it is especially important to properly manage changes that cause stress, because if tension persists for a long time, we cannot perform either at work or in our social relationships.
For employees
individual psychological counseling - Employee Counseling Service
As part of the Family-Friendly University Program, Semmelweis University launched an Employee Counseling Service under the professional leadership of the Institute of Behavioral Sciences.
They can contact the Counselor with any psychological problem that is related to or hinders their work in some way. Such problems may include, among others, difficulty managing stress and anxiety, relationship and/or relationship problems, time management issues, difficulties with family members, problems resulting from various losses, their own/parents/children/partners’ illnesses, searching for a professional identity, uncertainty, and difficulty making decisions.
Although our specialists are psychiatrists, clinical psychologists or other specialists who also have a psychotherapist’s degree, counseling is not the same as psychiatric care. The data of the employees are not included in the data of the healthcare system, and the care is financed not by social security, but by the university.
Counseling helps prevent the development of more serious psychological symptoms later, so it has a preventive nature. If psychiatric or clinical psychological help is needed instead of counseling and the employee requests it, the Counseling Service staff will provide information about available therapeutic options.
What the Employee Counseling Service does not deal with:
- It cannot provide emergency help.
- It cannot help with problems related to alcohol, substance abuse, or other addictions (e.g. gambling).
- The Counseling Service does not provide medication treatment.
- In the event that you do not need counseling, but rather shorter or longer psychotherapy.
In the above cases, the University’s Psychiatric and Psychotherapy Clinic can help, and outside the university, regional providers can help. The link below will help you find regionally competent psychiatric clinics available in the country.
HOW DOES CONSULTING WORK?
-
First time: After contacting you after logging in, we start with a personal, informative conversation, during which we go over the questions and problems you would like help with, and then we map out the options. The duration of a consultation is 45 minutes. After that, there are 3-4 more opportunities to focus on the problem that has arisen.
-
Additional options: If the problem requires longer and deeper intervention, we will make suggestions regarding further steps and try to help you find the right institution or specialist (outpatient care, or if necessary, we can even help you access hospital treatment).
The session is conducted online.

For students
Student counseling
The university years are often called one of the most defining periods of life. At the same time, it is also one of the most sensitive periods, bringing many changes and challenges to students. The academic burdens, exam anxiety, adaptation to a new life situation, but also the typical aspects of young adulthood, such as the formation of a professional identity, the establishment of intimate relationships or the emergence of independence, are all factors that can lead to stagnation, crisis or even the development of more serious mental problems.
We consider it of paramount importance to facilitate coping, mobilize resources and prevent students from receiving mental health assistance. The Student Psychological Consultation Service (“student counseling”), which is being renewed and expanded within the framework of the Family-Friendly University Program and is under the professional leadership of the Institute of Behavioral Sciences, welcomes students of Semmelweis University with any psychological problems that hinder their studies.
