The Directorate of International Relations supervises and coordinates Semmelweis University’s bilateral relationships, which, enable the most talented students and researchers to pursue internships or additional studies at partner institutions abroad.
These agreements also enable international students and lecturers to spend their internship at an institute or clinic of Semmelweis University.

The National University of Singapore Yong LooLin School of Medicine and Semmelweis University have entered into a student exchange agreement to provide a 4-week-long clinical rotation for 5 students in Singapore
Period of clinical rotation: August 4 – August 29, 2025
Students are expected to cover:
- Round trip air transportation
- Health insurance
- Medical liability insurance
- Living expenses
- Cost of general medical examination and vaccines
Financial Support

Since 1995, there has been an exchange agreement between Semmelweis University and the State University of New York Buffalo School of Medicine, thanks to which numerous Hungarian medical students have been able to complete a 3-month professional internship in the United States. Students can earn the opportunity to travel based on an annual application process.
University of California Davis School of MedicineAccording to the agreement established with the University of California Davis School of Medicine since 2007, several 5th and 6th-year medical students can apply annually for a 3-month fully funded professional internship in the United States.
Rutgers University
In September 2015, Semmelweis University and Rutgers University signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation. The collaboration encompasses both education and research. Mutual mobility is facilitated through the Erasmus+ program. The faculty and student mobility cooperation promotes exploring the interchangeability between the programs of the two universities.
University of Western Ontario Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry
According to the memorandum of understanding between Semmelweis University and the University of Western Ontario Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, the American university will host two fifth-year students from Semmelweis University for a four-week summer internship.
Thanks to our unique and excellent relationship with Saitama University, every year two students and one faculty member can travel to Japan from Semmelweis University for a professional internship, and a similar number of Japanese students and faculty members are hosted at Semmelweis University.
The collaboration with the Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg, which has been ongoing for more than three decades, ranks among the oldest and most successful international partnerships of our university. Thanks to the extensive collaboration opportunities, researchers, faculty, and students of Semmelweis University have the opportunity to apply for grants announced in the fields of general medicine, dentistry, and pharmaceutical sciences every year. Additionally, every two years, the University of Freiburg, the University of Heidelberg, and Semmelweis University organize a joint scientific session for their researchers to discuss the most current issues in medicine.
University of HeidelbergIn 1983, Semmelweis University signed a contract with the Ruprecht-Karls University of Heidelberg, Germany’s oldest university. Thanks to this agreement, close cooperation has been established between the two institutions in various fields over the years. Each year, a total of 5 weeks of researcher exchanges and four ten-month student scholarships are awarded. In addition, medical students have the opportunity to participate in a one-month German language course. Heidelberg University is one of the main organizers of the Heidelberg-Freiburg-Budapest scientific conference, which takes place every two years.
