Background

Research over the past decade has painted a concerning picture of the mental health of PhD students and the negative impact of doctoral studies on well-being. Findings from numerous countries worldwide suggest that the well-being of doctoral candidates significantly lags behind that of their peers with Master’s degrees, as well as the general social average. However, to our knowledge, comprehensive data on the well-being and doctoral experiences of PhD students in Hungary is still unavailable. Our research aims to fill this critical gap.

The primary objective of our study is to obtain a cross-sectional overview of the well-being and specific doctoral experiences of PhD and DLA students in Hungary. We trust that our investigation will provide an opportunity for a more thorough understanding of the situation of doctoral students in Hungary, as well as a scientific basis for further research and the consideration of organizational or discipline-specific decisions and changes. To this end, the study seeks to reach all PhD students in Hungary, encouraging participation in a voluntary, self-reported questionnaire survey. The methodology applied during the survey allows for the comparison of results with general population data and findings published in international literature.

The research is a cross-sectional, one-time online data collection. The instrument is a self-administered online questionnaire available to students in both Hungarian and English, making it accessible to international students pursuing doctoral studies in Hungary.

The research is organized by the PhD Success and Well-being research group at Semmelweis University, in collaboration with the Association of Hungarian PhD and DLA Candidates (DOSZ).

Data collection phase: March-April 2026.
