The main focus of the Haematology Working Group’s acivity is the application and development of treatments for malignant haematopoietic diseases (multiple myeloma, acute leukaemias, chronic leukaemias, myeloproliferative diseases, lymphoproliferative diseases). The Department is involved in several international trials looking for advanced drugs for these diseases. Another important area of research is the study and treatment of haemophilia, in particular acquired haemophilia and von Willebrand disease.

The third, newly developed research field is the therapeutic use of haematopoietic and mesenchymal stem cells, and related translational research. This new subdivision of the Department have a fully equipped laboratory for preparative, analytical and biobanking activities to support autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. We have also established a mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) laboratory for the production, characterisation, biobanking and related research and development of MSCs.
