The special field of interest of the Working Group is the diagnosis and treatment of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract diseases, as well as the removal of precancerous lesions.

The main research areas are the following:

  1. Novel treatments for inflammatory bowel disease. Our institute is a biological treatment centre, and has access to the most advanced therapeutic methods. Further treatment options are also available within the framework of clinical trials. The inflammatory bowel disease clinical trials have an additional benefit by providing comparison of the effectivity of new treatments, immunogenecity and provide data towards the trend of personalized therapy. The effectivity of the novel treatments is the most exciting question in the field.
  2. Microscopic colitis: the course, treatment and follow-up of the disease. Furthermore, assessment of the microscopic colitis risk factors and association, correlation of the disease with changes in bone density is a new field of interest. The national Microscopic Colitis Register is under development. Participation in biological treatment research through the close relationship with the European Microscopic Colitis Society is also an opportunity.
  3. Assessment of the effectiveness of the colorectal screening program implemented in our Institute. The research field is the characterization of the colon precancerous lesions and colorectal cancers by the age, gender and colon localizations.
