The Department of Internal Medicine and Haematology was established on 15 May 2020 by reorganising the professional activities of the three former internal medicine departments. (The Department of Internal Medicine and Oncology was created at the same time.)
The general activities of the Department have been well established by several decades of experience and devotion to research, teaching and patient management primarily in the fields of metabolic diseases, oncology, haematology, immunology, gastroenterology and cardiology.
Profile
The professional activity of our Department covers the following areas: internal medicine, haematology, immunology, cardiology, endocrinology, metabolic diseases, oncology and gastroenterology. Our Department houses the National Angioedema Centre, which is also the Central-Eastern European HANO Education Centre, as well as the Complement Diagnostic Laboratory, which deals with the examination of the complement system in a unique way in Hungary and in Central Europe.
Education
Internal medicine is taught to medical undergraduates of the Faculty of Medicine, as well as the Faculty of Dentistry in Hungarian, English and German. Recently, three affiliated teaching units specialising in rheumatology and haemato-immunology have become involved in the education of medical undergraduates.
These are
- the Buda Hospital of the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God (Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology) (in Hungarian: Budai Irgalmasrendi Kórház)
- the National Institute of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy (Section of Rheumatology and Physiotherapy) (in Hungarian: Országos Reumatológiai és Fizioterápiás Intézet)
- and the St. László Hospital (Section of Infectology)
We continuously work on methodological development to improve the efficiency of education (blended learning, establishing OSCE conditions). Continuous education and training of postgraduate doctors are also part of the education activities of the Department.
Health Care
The Department has 135 beds and is regional reference centre of haematology, immunology and clinical oncology. We run several outpatient clinics covering the professional activities of the Department and one-day clinics for the treatment of haematological and oncological patients.
Research
The high standard of research carried out by the staff of the Department has been internationally recognised. Ph.D. courses are an integral feature of the Department’s activities. Since 1997, the research laboratory of the Department has been recognised as a special research unit and supported as such by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
All our professional profiles also work as a research group – our Department is the University’s third best publishing institute. In addition to basic research, our Department plays an active role in the development of new treatments in form of clinical studies.
