In celebration of its 250th Anniversary, Semmelweis University is launching a series of interactive, public health-themed programmes called Semmelweis Health Days. Between September 2019 and June 2020, a total of ten events will be open for families, students, university staff, and Hungarian and international visitors to attend. Event days will alternate between Fridays and Saturdays.

Friday programmes, taking place every two months, will offer presentations, interactive programmes, lectures, and screenings for families and individuals of all ages. Saturday programmes, also held in alternating months, will focus on a narrower field of expertise, allowing for a more personalized consultation with participating physicians and practitioners, as well as health screenings.

  • Researchers have been long overwhelmed by the development, structure and functioning of the nervous system. Billions of neurons talk simultaneously which represents codes of orders. This paramount challenge is achieved by rigorous rules which give the floor to selected participants to talk – or to let to talk. A tenfold number of further participants are included to maintain function only. Science experienced a quantum leap in the last decades when previously inconceivable techniques allowed researchers to investigate the nervous system with efficacy and precision. Yes, you can surely drive a handful of neurons mad by switching the light on.

Are kidneys really miracle-working organs? Is it possible to observe glomerular filtration live? How many people suffer from kidney problems in Hungary? Is it possible to predict life expectancy from urine? Is studying kidneys still a worthy research project?

  • From ages 14 and up
  • Max. number of participants: 20
  • Location: Basic Medical Science Center (EOK), 1094 Budapest, Tűzoltó u. 37-47
  • Although now we take the abundant supply of medicines for granted, lots of effort of the past two centuries has led to the development of our current drug supply. Through a few drug molecules and their history, the lecture offers insight into why organic chemistry is important for pharmacists, how new molecules are designed with the help of modelling techniques, what challenges can arise when creating new molecules, how the structure of molecules can be studied, how and at what target point medicines work in the human body and how complex and creative the work is that leads to the production of new drugs. After the 30-minute-long presentation participants will have the opportunity to try and build the model of an agent of a drug available in pharmacies with the help of a building kit and following the instructions on distributed cards, thus making chemistry more concrete. Depending on the number of participants, some molecules will be drawn on the computer, which could be viewed in different graphic settings on the projector screen. Although the molecules built by the participants cannot be taken home, they will be offered free modelling software that can be installed on PCs, Android of Mac Os devices.

Why is it important to participate in oncological screening programs? – registration is required
Dr. Péter Padányi oncology resident

  • Time: 13.00
  • From ages 18 and up
  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Max. number of participants: 80
Cancer is the leading cause of mortality – after cardiovascular diseases – in the Western countries, and in Hungary as well. In the past few decades – most notably in the case of breast cancer – the mortality rates have been improving, thanks to efficient screening programs. However in Hungary to this day there aren’t many obligatory screening programs. Diagnosing the malignant diseases at early- and potentially curable- stages is crucial not just from medical but from health care and economical standpoint. In the near future new screening programs are expected to be introduced, for example in the case of colorectal cancer.
