Prominent  Doctoral Defenses – Call for Applications

Purpose of the Scholarship:

The Semmelweis Doctoral School offers the opportunity to organize doctoral defenses at the Semmelweis Salon (1085 Budapest, Üllői út 26. I. floor). The scope of the application includes the provision of the venue, technical equipment, and catering services.

Eligible Applicants:

Doctoral students.
In case of oversubscription, preference will be given to applicants whose dissertation includes a first-author publication in a D1-ranked journal and who intend to conduct the defense in English.

Available Defense Dates:

Defenses can be organized at the Semmelweis Salon on the following dates:

  • November 3, 2025 (Monday): 10:00, 13:00, 16:00
  • November 4, 2025 (Tuesday): 9:00, 12:00

Amount of Support:

Catering services can be arranged through the University’s contracted partner. The Doctoral Office can contribute 100,000 HUF + VAT toward the cost.

Defense Organization:

Defenses are organized in the usual manner. The candidate’s supervisor must confirm that the committee members are available at the proposed time. The Doctoral Office will provide the venue and technical equipment. Upon request, a video recording of the defense can be made and published on the University’s website.

Applications must be submitted electronically to the Doctoral Office of Semmelweis University in a single PDF file to the following email address: phd.palyazatok@semmelweis.hu
Deadline: October 3, 2025

Applications will be evaluated and applicants notified within 3 working days of receipt. Available time slots will be continuously updated in the call. To increase the chances of success, it is recommended to indicate multiple possible time slots in the application.

The candidate must ensure that all documentation required for the public defense (CV, invitation, responses to reviewers’ comments) is submitted to the Doctoral Office by October 9.
