A high-level delegation from Shanghai Tongren Hospital paid a professional visit to Semmelweis University on 25 September, during which the two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The delegation from the hospital, which serves as an affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, was welcomed by Prof. Dr. Béla Merkely, Rector of Semmelweis University, at the Városmajor Heart and Vascular Center. Following the signing ceremony, the parties discussed potential areas of cooperation in education, research and mobility.

Shanghai Tongren Hospital is one of China’s long-established healthcare institutions. Founded in 1866, it now serves as a teaching hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. With nearly 1,200 beds and approximately 2,500 staff members, the hospital operates 37 clinical and 8 diagnostic departments. Its key areas of expertise include gastrointestinal oncology and endoscopy, as well as medical technology innovation. Shanghai Jiao Tong University is among the world’s leading universities, and a direct institutional cooperation agreement between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Semmelweis University is also currently being prepared.

The Shanghai delegation was led by Prof. Dr. Ma Jun, President of Shanghai Tongren Hospital. The delegation also included Yong Gang, Deputy Director of the Shanghai Changning District Health Commission, Dr. Peng Haixia, Director and Chief Physician of the hospital’s Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Center, Dr. Qiu Jin, Director and Chief Physician of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Dr. Xu Liling, Director of the General Office of the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Flexible Medical Robotics. Wang Yanzi, Secretary-General of the Anhui Chamber of Commerce in Hungary, also joined the delegation.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between Semmelweis University and Shanghai Tongren Hospital establishes a general framework for the further development of educational and academic relations. It provides opportunities for the mobility of academic staff, researchers and students, the preparation of joint research projects, as well as the joint organization of conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops.

During the professional discussion following the signing ceremony, the parties reviewed areas in which the clinical and research profiles of the two institutions may complement each other. As the members of the delegation are all practising physicians, they showed particular interest not only in the University’s educational and research activities but also in clinical care at Semmelweis. Prof. Dr. Béla Merkely introduced the work and professional activities of the Városmajor Heart and Vascular Center, where the guests gained insight into interventional cardiology and were also able to observe an interventional heart valve replacement surgery.

The programme continued at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Prof. Dr. Sándor Valent gave the delegation a detailed overview of the department’s activities, including its assisted reproduction and IVF services.

The delegation then visited the Anatomy & Innovation Center for Education and Research, where Dr. Endre Kontsek, Operations Manager, presented the infrastructure supporting medical education, practical skills development and innovative educational technologies. The final stop of the programme was the Department of Surgery, Transplantation and Gastroenterology, which was particularly relevant given the gastroenterological expertise represented within the delegation.

Over the course of the day, the Shanghai guests gained a comprehensive overview of how education, research, innovation and clinical patient care are integrated at Semmelweis University.
